Teresa Halbach and Ryan Hillegas Talked by Phone Every Monday in October 2005 Except for October 31st (or Did They Talk, But in Person or Using Different Phones?)

Teresa and Ryan talked by phone every Monday in October 2005 except for Halloween Monday, October 31st, the day Teresa went missing.

Beginning on Monday, October 17th, Ryan seems to be on a mission, calling his sister Tara, or her husband, Chad, five times. Teresa calls Ryan twice on this day, first on his cell phone, and then she immediately calls him back on his parents' land line, with the conversation lasting almost 15 minutes.

On October 25th Ryan and Teresa have another long phone conversation.

Between October 10th and October 25th, Teresa and Ryan talked by phone 16 times.

October 25th will be their last phone conversation before Teresa goes missing, six days later, on October 31st.

At 6:01 and 6:02 PM on Friday, October 28th, Ryan calls Teresa's childhood friend Kelly Pitzen. He hangs up when she doesn't answer the first time, so he immediately calls her again, at which time she answers and they talk for two to three minutes (or he leaves a 2-3 minute message).

After Ryan calls Kelly, Kelly calls Teresa three times, at 8:30, 9:32 and 9:34 PM on October 28th, but Teresa doesn't answer or return her calls using her cell phone.

A waitress or bartender at a restaurant/bar on Main Street in Fond du lac, WI (where Wisconsin Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager lived), called CASO on November 5th to tell them that she served Teresa Halbach on Friday, October 28th (around 22-minute mark in the video at this link), the day Kelly was trying to call Teresa, after having talked to Ryan.

Before Teresa was reported as missing on November 3rd, the two back-to-back calls from Ryan to Kelly on October 28th were the only calls between the two of them (Ryan's cell phone bill in discovery begins on October 5th).

On October 29th, Teresa was last seen at a bar in Stockbridge, WI, around midnight, by the bar owner. The bar owner confirmed he saw her with Kelly, who was an acquaintance of his. [Source]

On this night, Ryan's last call was to his sister Tara, or her husband, at 11:48 PM, the same time that Teresa and Kelly were spotted at a bar in Stockbridge - it appears that Ryan also was with Teresa and Kelly because he said the last time he saw Teresa she was dressed as a cowgirl for Halloween.

Ryan testified that on October 30th he stopped by the home Teresa and Scott shared to drop off something for Scott and that he talked to Teresa as she was sitting in front of her computer. Ryan was not asked if Scott was home when he stopped by, but it was implied that Scott wasn't home.

However, Scott told detectives that the last time he saw Teresa was at 2 PM on Sunday, October 30th, which would mean that Teresa left home at 2 PM on that day, at which time Scott was home.

Ryan had just talked to Scott on the phone at 1:35 PM on October 30th, so why would he stop by if Scott wasn't home? He wouldn't, which means, if he stopped by the house it was because Scott told him at 1:35 PM that he was at home.

Teresa attended her grandfather's birthday party at his home on October 30th, so we can assume that she left home sometime after 12 PM (noon). Scott's statement has Teresa leaving for the party at 2 PM.

The birthday party would have been after church services, maybe combined with lunch or right after lunch. Teresa parents are dairy farmers, and they would have not had an evening party because the cows need to be milked twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.

Teresa didn't make any phone calls on October 30th; however (while at home, if tower 2111 is her home tower), she received two incoming calls: one at 4:41 PM (call duration 55 seconds) and the other at 5:05 PM (call duration 44 seconds).

If the fax of Teresa's cell phone pre-bill is correct and if tower 2111 is Teresa's home tower, then Teresa arrived home from her grandfather's birthday party by by 4:41 PM on Sunday, October 30th.

Ryan and Teresa talked by phone every Monday in October except for Monday, October 31st, the day Teresa went missing.

Ryan told a reporter in 2006 that the last time he saw Teresa was at her house and that she was dressed as a cowgirl for Halloween.

Halloween was on Monday, October 31st.

Kelly was interviewed by reporters after Teresa went missing. Here is what she had to say:
Many of Halbach's friends, in fact, have been gathering in the evenings at the old farmhouse to share memories and to be among the things that Teresa cared for. Such evenings together would surely have been directed by Halbach in trying times, said Kelly Pitzen, a friend from childhood. "She was always the organizer," Pitzen remembered, "always the one bringing people together." [Madison.com]

About 100 people showed up to look for any clue to her whereabouts. The large group split up to cover more ground, searching wooded areas, knocking on doors, looking in Dumpsters. They said until someone does find Halbach they're hoping for the best. "I'm not letting myself think that we're going to find something bad. My mind is so far removed from the fact that I might find my friend out here. I'm just trying to keep hope that she's okay," Kelly Pitzen expressed. [Action 2 News]

Kelly C Pitzen was on the defendant's witness list but was not called to testify.

Teresa never called Kelly's cell phone ending in 3588 from her own cell phone.

Why didn't Teresa answer Kelly's calls leading up to October 14th? Did she use another phone to return these calls since there is no record of Teresa every calling Kelly's cell phone?

In August 2005, Kelly and Teresa went on a road trip through central Wisconsin, according to Kelly's November 13, 2005, interview with Post Crescent.

From the Post Crescent interview:
It was that sense of adventure that made childhood friend Kelly Pitzen want to stay close to Halbach.

In an impromptu road trip in August through central Wisconsin, the two women camped one night in a tent Halbach borrowed by her younger brother, Mike.

Pitzen saw a hole ripped in the tent. Alarmed someone could have been trying to get in, she nudged Halbach.

"That's nothing. I clawed my way out," Halbach told her. She needed to go to the rest room and had not been able to find her way out.

The next morning, they patched the hole with duct tape.

"We laughed for weeks," Pitzen said. "We did a lot of laughing during that road trip that my stomach was hurting."
Why did Ryan call Kelly on October 28th (the only call between the two of them before Teresa was reported missing on November 3rd)?

Fassbender interviewed Kelly on January 20, 2006 at her apartment in Appleton, which she had moved into in August 2005, the same month that she and Teresa went on a road trip through central Wisconsin.

Fassbender wrote that Teresa "had been a childhood friend" of Kelly's and that "they went to school together right up to college and then kept in touch through college" (Teresa went to University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and Kelly went to University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, the same school Ryan Hillegas attended). Fassbender wrote that Kelly advised him that Teresa "was one of her best girlfriends forever." Kelly said she and Teresa shared a cousin on the Halbach side.

The following is a summary of Kelly's calls to Teresa's cell phone (call duration in parentheses). Teresa never called Kelly's cell phone number ending in 3588 from her own cell phone in 2005.

On October 28th, Ryan called Kelly, who, after talking to Ryan, seemed determined to get in touch with Teresa.

Kelly called Teresa three times on the night of October 28th. The first call went to voicemail. The next two calls appear to be three-way calls initiated by Kelly.

A bartender who was an acquaintance of Kelly called CASO dispatch and said that Kelly and Teresa were at his bar around midnight on Saturday, which could have been Friday night, which became Saturday at midnight.

Kelly calls to Teresa:

  2. RH Call Records - Interesting find? (self.TickTockManitowoc)
    submitted 11 hours ago * by Sl0per

I've only recently watched MaM but from the moment I saw it something about RH didn't sit right with me. Please accept my apologies if this has already been covered!

After doing my own very amateur investigating into RH phone records I noticed that on 31st October at 3:50PM he made a call that lasted approx 21 minutes to a number that cropped up a few times in his call records. The thing that interests me about this is firstly the time of the call (around the time TH would have been seen, possibly when TH in cowgirl outfit that only RH seems to know about) & secondly this number belongs to a CB (I believe I can't share the name) who has since had run ins with the law, most recently in 2016 for battery

The majority of RH long calls are with females, some with TH too but the timing of this 21 minute call & the nature of the receiver of the call made me think did RH make a move on TH that turned nasty & panicking he called CB for advice?

I think this is indeed an interesting point. It fits in with the theory of TH making it home and being confronted/assaulted in her own driveway.

Calling a male family member to help you out of a big "jam" like this also makes sense to me. And RH would have had access to her work documents and knew where her last appointments would have been - what better place to dump the vehicle/remains than a large quarry next to the salvage yard she visited? I wonder what type of vehicle CB drove at the time - a white jeep-type perhaps?

CB is not talked about too much. He was RH sister's husband at the time. He has has several run ins w/ the law. He was in jail again as of Dec 2017.

  3. The did bad police work. They should have taken a statement from the ex and the roommate on 11/3 or 11/4.

They should have investigated them as "persons of interest" because at that point in time they believed that Zipperer was her last stop and they would also have to imagine that she may have gone home after that.

Forensics 101 you question persons of interest right of the bat. This includes the last known people to see the victim AND most importantly the significant other or ex significant other. These are the basics. They should have questioned Ryan for an alibi. Once the alibi checked out and his story was confirmed he would have been cleared. The fact they completely failed to do such a thing is suspicious in itself. Again these are fundamental elementary steps that are followed when investigating. It is important to understand the steps that LE takes when investigating. If you do not have any idea how that works then you will not understand why so many people have an issue with why he was never questioned about where he was that day. It's completely absurd.

I also think it is ridiculous not to question the ex boyfriend who is still in close contact with her to at least get a freaking alibi. This is IMO one of the reasons MCSD is getting backlash. They didn't meet a minimum criteria and now we know. There could be an explanation for those bruises but we'll never know and with these pictures, it makes me even more upset with LE.

If LE will drop the ball on something they had to know would be a high-profile case, what possible chance would Joe Q. Public who is accused of robbing the local convenience store have?

If she is a missing person on 11/3 they would talk to her family and ask questions. They would talk to her roommate and ask questions. They would talk to her co-workers and closest friends and ask questions. The First 48 hours are critical.

Surely, they would quickly learn that RH is her ex BF because he is currently friends with the missing persons Brother and Roommate. IIRC, TH was talking to RH as late as the day before Halloween. My point of contention with the investigation is not interviewing RH because he is a typical Person of Interest and I cannot fathom why they didn't alibi him or at least interview him. Also, not noticing bruises and scratches on the ex BF who had such recent contact with her and wanting to know about them. There is an explanation but we'll never know. If I were Strang & Buting investigator, I would also investigate these things myself, especially if I'm going with a "Law Enforcement framed our client" defense. Photos were available to them. They based their defense on LE planting but Denny prevented them from introducing other suspects. TBH, I just want answers. These holes do beg the question, why not? I would think both sides would want to make sure there bases were covered.

  4. They didn't know about the car or the blood in the car or the key or the bones or ..... Or did they? On Nov. 3 when LE were in contact with RH. Or on the the 4th. Or even on the morning of the 5th. They didn't know about all those things on SA property. So they would be looking for all possible suspects until about 11am on the 5th. Then the search for suspects would have probably excluded friends and family. Narrow the search. So your answer explains why they finally arrested SA it does not explain why they did not even question him about it.

I just can't get past how they have a high profile case in their little town because they convicted the wrong man the first time but would readily take everything at face value. If it were me, I would be working 24 hours per day documenting everything and asking a million questions. I follow your reasoning but I have a hard time reconciling this high profile case with more holes than Noah's Ark with 2 woodpeckers on it. ETA: Without the pictures from the 5th, Teresa is a missing person on the 3rd. How hard is it to get alibi's (not prints and DNA) from the usual suspects (POI's)?

Your daughter's been missing for several days and you notice her ex-boyfriends mangled hands. They look like they might have deep scratch marks on them. Do you ask him how he got them? You know, because your daughter is missing. This is much ado about nothing, in the grand scheme of things, because we need solid evidence and these are photos. My point, however, is that your pushing too far the other way. A good LEO would have asked. Who knows what that might have revealed. Maybe nothing. But you do your damn job.

You can shout SA is guilty from the mountaintop -- and he might be -- but LEOs brought intense scrutiny upon themselves when they followed almost no protocol with the case, beginning with their feigned recusal of Manitowoc SD from the investigation. Very few reasonable people question an investigation conducted with integrity. People rightfully question this case because integrity is almost nowhere to be found. Lawyers and law enforcement agencies around the country aren't balking at the procedures of the investigation for nothing. They had an obligation to ask RH about his hands the moment they saw them and knew TH was missing.

The other hand looks like bruising. Speculation -- if someone was strangling someone, and the victim was able to pull back the pinky hard, you'd get a sprained pinky that bruised up and down the outer hand like that. OR... it's just bruising/dirt from searching. Also possible. What really matters is this: he wasn't investigated. Let that sink in.

Scratches are evidence that physical trauma occurred fairly recently. Normally this would be rational to investigate how they occurred with someone with a close relationship to someone reported missing and potential foul play suspected. But since investigating this was unlikely to uncover anything of value in convicting Avery, and might actually uncover something that would work towards proving Avery innocent, law enforcement failed to investigate the cause of those scratches.

  5. It's not necessarily a cause for suspicion, independent of everything else, but taken with the fact that his ex girlfriend, who he said he was close with, is missing, and then her remains turn up pointing to her being murdered, it does become a reason to check him out at the very least. (The fact that he was he ex is reason alone, but added scratches and bruises on his hands kinda make ruling him out really important.)

I just checked the footage from MaM of these screenshots (Episode 2, time stop at 35:06), and the scratches are very visible, in other shots too. It is most definitely three uniform scratches, the middle one being slightly higher than the other two. Very consistent with what you'd imagine fingernail scratches would look like if a female scratched while moving away from him, i.e. only the three middle fingers would likely dig in on a man with quite smallish male hands like Ryan.

I Watched live footage via Netflix, Episode 2. Time stop at 35:06. It is very clear those are scratches on his left hand, not ink, or dirt. Also this was right before they began searching. So, marks couldn't have come from searching.

If he did it, he didn't just "happen" to do it after the visit to Avery. He would have known her schedule and realized that it offered a perfect frame-up scenario.

To put it simply? He wasn't the focus of their investigation so it wouldn't matter how many bruises and scrapes he had. It didn't trigger their interest when he 'guessed' her password so why would a few cuts make any impact?

More evidence to make my theory make sense. I believe that Teresa made it home that day and Ryan came over b/c she wasn't answering her phone. Matter of fact did Teresa have a car charger? Anyway he was upset about the new boo thang she had and they got into a scuffle. I think he dumped her body off somewhere and that colborn found her suv on the 4th.

I don't recall reading anywhere that there was an active search party on the 4th. Only on the 5th.

They didn't do any on-foot searching on 11/4, according to Hillegas' trial testimony. He had fliers printed and didn't pick them up until around 1pm. Then he got some people together to distribute fliers (iirc he estimated ~2000 fliers). The friends went and did the fliers—NOT searching for any signs of her. That evening, after putting fliers up, a few of her friends drove around on what they believed would have been her normal paths for work, just to see if she'd been run off the road or whatnot. But again, no on-foot searching, no digging through branches, etc. Then, come 11/5, that's when Hillegas' story becomes a bit… fishy.

  6. I would like to see cell phone tower locations for the cell phone calls of Ryan Hillegas and Mike Halbach from Nov2 2005 through Nov4 2005. I believe Ryan and Mike had located the Rav4 in the Avery salvage yard on Nov3 and had made contact with Deputy Colburn as Colburn left the Avery Salvage yard and informed Colburn of the location of Teresa's Rav4 and that is what motivated Colburn to call Manitowoc dispatch to verify the information of license number, year and make as belonging to Teresa Halbach.
