Avery's Neighbor Saw a Green/Blue RAV4 Accompanied by a White Jeep Before Pam Sturm Found It in the Salvage Yard

So this is what I think they did... They were lying in wait in the back of the Avery Auto Salvage, waiting for Steven Avery to leave, and once he left with his mother and nephew, Bryan Dassey, for Crivitz around 6 AM on 11/5, the Motley crew moved in heavy, with everything they needed, including towing capabilities, to move these cars around, just so they could place Teresa Halbach's RAV4, cover it up with all that stuff, and set the stage. All of this was done before Earl Avery, the only Avery sibling who didn't live on the property, even arrived (Chuck Avery had left for Crivitz with Brendan around 8 PM on 11/4; Allan Avery had left on 11/3). Meanwhile, back at Teresa's farmhouse, Ryan Hillegas, LE, and specifically Pam Sturm, are going over the next phase, getting ready for the FIND. You can definitely see bushes or trees on 11/4, and then two cars take their place on 11/5. The blob behind the white SUV/station wagon was definitely replaced. They sped up the playback of the 11/4 flyover video when they made the edited copy: not only are segments missing, it's intentionally sped up to create the crazy footage we see. [Reddit Comments]

Dispatch Call at 26:37: Vicky Siebert, Calling for Her Father, Who is Reporting Activity at the Back Quarry Entrance

What Steven Avery’s former neighbour witnessed
By Jeff Klassen
April 28, 2016

Steven Avery’s former neighbor said he saw things around the time of Teresa Halbach’s murder that raise a lot of questions – and no one has asked him about it before.

The recent Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer has made international headlines and raised many questions surrounding the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach’s in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin and the subsequent trial that convicted Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey in crimes related to murder.

Wilmer Seibert in his backyard. Seibert said he thinks he may have seen Teresa Halbach’s Toyota Rav4 driving into the back of Avery’s Auto Salvage via a back quarry road days before a volunteer search party found it abandoned with blood on it in 2005.
One of the key pieces of evidence in the case was Halbach’s blue/green Toyota Rav4 discovered by a volunteer search party in the rear area of Avery Auto Salvage on November 5th, 2005.

On the southeast side of the Avery Auto Salvage, off Jambo Creek road directly beside the entrance to the quarry behind the yard, lives Wilmer Seibert, a man in his 70s who considers himself friends with the Averys.

Seibert said he saw what he thinks might be Teresa Halbach’s Toyota Rav4 accompanied by another vehicle, a mysterious white Jeep, “days” before the search party found the Rav4 on the salvage yard.

Seibert said he was just hanging out in his backyard one day when he saw the Rav4 speeding quickly down the backroad that leads into the quarry behind the Avery Auto Salvage, and directly behind it was the white Jeep.

About half an hour later only the Jeep returned he said.

A screenshot showing Seibert’s Jambo Creek Rd. property in relation to the quarry road and Avery’s Auto Salvage.
“It was a white Jeep, just a smaller Jeep, and it looked liked the paint was peeling off the hood. You could see like an undercoating on the hood. The Jeep was what I saw come back out but I didn’t see the (the Rav4 come out),” said Seibert.

Siebert cannot precisely remember the day or time he saw the vehicle because of how long ago it was now, but he estimates he saw the vehicles “less than a week,” perhaps “a couple days or three days,” before it was discovered by the search party.

Seibert said vehicles regularly travel down the quarry road but he noticed these two particular vehicles because they were driving faster than usual.

“They must have been going about 40 miles an hour,” said Seibert.

Seibert could not tell who or how many people were in either vehicle.

“Shortly after (the incident he witnesses) the lady found the car back there,” said Seibert referring to the vehicle’s discovery by Pamela Sturm as she participated in a volunteer search party.

Seibert stands on the edge of his property and by the road where he said he thinks he saw Teresa Halbach’s Rav4 days beforea volunteer search party did in 2005.
Seibert said he cannot be 100 percent certain it was Halbach’s Rav4 but, because it was the same green/blue color, and because he rarely saw Rav4s, he’s pretty sure it was.

Seibert said he’s been buying parts from Avery Auto Salvage since before he moved to the home in the 1970, he also raised questions about how the search parties could have found the vehicle so quickly.

“I don’t know how (the search party) could find that car that quick because I needed a gas tank for a truck (once) and they gave me the row (that it was in) and what kind of truck it was and I didn’t find that truck in that short of a time,” said Seibert.

Chuck Avery, who is also Steven Avery’s brother, has owned the salvage yard since the 1990s, and he confirmed that at the time of Teresa Halbach’s murder the back of the Avery lot could be accessed from the quarry road, but since that time the rear entrance has been blocked.

Seibert said he was not questioned by police or lawyers except for when an FBI agent came to his door shortly after Halbach went missing and showed him a picture of Halbach and asked if he knew her, which he didn’t.

Seibert is a quiet family man and he said that because no one asked him directly about it at the time he never thought to tell anyone.

“I really didn’t want to get involved. I didn’t know for sure what was going on and how this was going to be handled,” said Seibert.

Seibert said he is not looking for attention and he is only speaking about it now because Netflix documentary made him ask questions.

Seibert Photos Smaller Size-8

Seibert said during the investigation of Halbach’s murder the police barricaded the quarry road entrance, about 50 feet from his back steps, and blocked the same section of road that he had observed the Rav4 and Jeep earlier.

“He said if anyone moves those barricades give me a call, but he never gave me a number. How would I get ahold of him?” said Seibert.

One evening Siebert said he witnessed Manitowoc County Sherriff’s Department vehicles driving past the barricade and then going through the Avery property with lights late into the night.

He said he wanted to report that someone had crossed the barrier but he didn’t know who to call, so he told his daughter, Victoria Seibert, to call the local police who then told her that there was nothing to worry about.

His daughter confirmed this.

Wilmer Seibert said the next day it was announced on television that they had found Teresa Halbach’s keys on the property but doesn’t make any claims to what that might mean.

Seibert actually likes the Averys and considers them friends.

He said since buying his house and raising nine children neither him nor anyone from his family, that he knows of, has ever had a bad dealing with any of the Avery family.

Seibert had even been on fishing trips with Allen Avery, Steven’s father.

“I can’t really find no fault with them because I never had any trouble with them. I always thought they were good people. They treated me fair at least,” he said.

Google Maps captured an image in September 2009 of a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo in Andy Colborn's driveway. In 2005, in was not uncommon for Wisconsinites to refer to SUVs as "jeeps" or "trucks."

Critics of Siebert's statements have pointed out that the 'white Jeep' might, in fact, have been a light silver Suzuki owned by the Averys. On Reddit, where Avery's guilt or innocence continues to be a hot topic, people have parsed how likely it would be to confuse a Suzuki for a Jeep, and whether, in certain lighting, silver could be perceived as white." [Rolling Stone, July 8, 2016]

However, in October/November of 2005, Avery's gray Suzuki was parked in his garage and could not be driven because the clutch was out.

Robert Fabian was interviewed by detectives about seeing Steven Avery on October 31st, 2005 between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. He and Earl Avery both lied (Earl’s wife is friends with Andy Colborn’s wife). Fabian wasn't at the Avery property with Earl on October 31st; he was there on Wednesday, November 2nd (CASO file, page 208 and page 237). At the pre-trial hearing (page 172), Earl said it was Wednesday or Thursday, not Monday, October 31st, when he and Fabian went rabbit hunting at the Avery property (Fabian and Earl's statements given to detectives in November 2005 were coerced and not truthful).

In November 2005, Fabian told detectives that on October 31st he saw Steven at his black truck, parked just outside his garage, unloading a snowmobile from a trailer hooked up to his truck. Fabian was supposed to testify that he saw the Suzuki outside the garage. The following is part of Fabian's testimony at Avery's trial.
Robert Fabian: Yes, I believe there was a snowmobile trailer hooked up to the truck. And I don't believe the garage doors were open. And I don't remember the van sitting there.

Ken Kratz: All right. Let's talk about each of those things individually.

Well he doesn't. He only talks about the garage door and burn barrel.

During closing arguments, Kratz says the following to the jury:

Ken Kratz: Mr. Fabian also tells you, at that time, just before dark, he places that just before dark, when the rabbit hunt was just about completed, that Mr. Avery's garage was closed. He couldn't see what was inside of the garage. There isn't any SUV any more. There is nothing to be seen. The garage is closed, but the Suzuki and the snowmobile are on the side of the garage. All right.
This was crucial, because if the Suzuki was not outside then the RAV4 could not possibly be in the garage.

Kratz lied to the jury.

From one of the images below (from Avery's trial), you can see that Steven had unloaded the snowmobile and put it inside the garage. This would have been around 5:00 p.m. on October 31st (or he could have put the snowmobile beside the garage and moved it inside later). The Suzuki was not outside the garage in any photos of Avery's property because it was inside the garage, where Steven had been working on it. The is no evidence to suggest the RAV4 was ever in the garage. The two tire prints below the Suzuki strongly suggests it never was. If the Suzuki was outside the garage, it was because there was a Monte Carlo inside the garage that Steven was working on.

Time stamps would be great. But I interpreted two incidents that this neighbor witnessed. The Rav4 and Jeep entering the quarry a few days before the 5th. And then a 2nd incident involving the barricades and lights at night during the LE activity, which is what he reported to his daughter who then called MTSO which then shows up in dispatch calls.

[–]MereGirl [score hidden] 42 minutes ago

That's what I gathered because he mentioned seeing the colors of the vehicles go in and only one coming out, then being surprised that lady found it so fast, and then the barricades, right?

[–]chromeomykiss 7 points an hour ago

Great find by you!! It has always been my opinion since day 1 that the Rav4 was driven onto the yard from that back quarry entrance off Jambo Cr. Rd. From the "sand" on the inside of wheel wells, the piece of "tumbleweed" stuck inside driver's side wheel well, and the route that is easily visible in aerial images and during helicopter portion of "flyover video".

So seeing this new information from the neighbor who lives directly adjacent to this back entrance is incredibly interesting!! Thanks again!

[–]Jmystery1[S] [score hidden] an hour ago

Your Welcome!! Yes and thank you for getting that dispatch call this gives more credibility to the story. And yes the way neighbor explains this makes sense as far as planting vehicle! I wonder if was moved into place afterwards at night when got covered or how that happened during non business hours or maybe was day of auction when only Chuck was there! Another thing to ponder!

[–]dark-dare 6 points an hour ago

TH car was obviously driven on muddy dirt roads, ie mud splashed up side, tires tread full of mud. There is damage and up under the front wheel there is chunks of mud, looks like it hit the ditch and buried the left front into a soft bank. The difference is that mud didn't come from just a gravel road, that mud came from a dirt road,ie quarry. There were lots of treed areas in the quarry where the car could be hidden until dark.

I just emailed the author with a request to contribute to this forum. I asked how he discovered this neighbor and if this information was ever turned over to Zellner or anyone else. I'm not sure why someone would post this interview to a brand new site and not share the information.

I don't understand the writer. He is clearly familiar with the case and the widespread attention the documentary got. He happens to stumble upon an eyewitness who provides testimony that no one else has provided which corroborates defense claims of evidence planting, as it relates to the Rav4. And he writes an article about it, but only posts it to a brand new site with no following and makes no apparent effort to publicize his findings? Every writer wants readers. He could have posted his article in the MaM forum back in April and gotten thousands of readers. Sorry, but it really doesn't make a lot of sense to me, and people here should relax until the author comes forward or the story is corroborated somewhere.

Somewhere in those recorded phone calls to MTSO the dispatcher calls LE and says a neighbour called and said there were cop cars around Jambo Rd., going into the Avery property. The LE guy checked it out and confirmed the police were blocking the area, or something like that. Sounds like it was the call this neighbour is referring to.

    [–]dark-dare 9 points 5 hours ago

Similar circumstances to the Ryan Ferguson case, no one asked the eyewitness if Ryan was the guy she saw. So she never volunteered the info until she talked to Ryan's dad and KZ years later.

[–]bennybaku 5 points 3 hours ago

I can certainly understand why he really didn't want to get involved.

[–]OpenMind4U [score hidden] an hour ago

Yes, you're really opened the 'Pandora Box' with this article!:)...I only wonder if reference to 'white jeep' could means something else. Remember, Brendan calls TH RAV4 'jeep' too?...so, maybe in this area, in 2005, where RAV4 wasn't such 'popular' way of transportation - for locals, SUV simply means 'jeep'?

[–]DrAPrunesquallor 4 points 4 hours ago

I don't understand why this story wasn't found until now, if it is indeed true? The article was written in April? Can OP elaborate on how the article was found?

    [–]Jmystery1[S] 7 points 3 hours ago*

Yes I can I have to give away my secret on how I share my articles! I look search Steven Avery everyday on google chrome search look under News and past 24 hours actually have it bookmarked. There was article showing water tower Manitowoc and then clicked on it and read was okay. I debate at times which articles to post don't like to post to many 2 a day at most so others can share as well. Anyways on bottom of article seen 2 other links and of course the neighbor one caught my eye and voila. I believe the traveling to where making a murderer was just posted today in news article! Here is the search and also links to the other 2 articles.

Here are other 2 articles this was main one found in search. These are actually good articles too and lots of local pictures!

    Thank you.

So just for clarification (for all) the OP originally found a related article by the same writer on the SOO website, which is a legit website owned/operated by Village Media, a Canadian company that is focusing on "local".

This would verify to me that the writer is legit and from there I would surmise that the original piece was published by SOO more so from a "regional interest" standpoint...and the "neighbor" article was probably deemed as "not local enough" from an editorial standpoint.

But hey, if you're a freelancer and travel to put together a piece, why not knock of a couple more in the meantime?

Maybe he didn't have a publishing outlet lined up or know how to "sell" the story to other Wisconsin outlets..

I would also surmise this writer isn't getting paid squat, and part of his compensation is the ability to promote other work and link to personal portfolio, website, etc. as part of the publishing gigs.

The fact the "travel" piece exists on both websites is a bit of a mystery as far as copyright goes (could have sold "first publishing rights only"?)

Just spitballing and trying to make sense of the whole publishing circle....

That being said, I still think it's a great find and has merit to it. Kudos!

[–]Jmystery1[S] 4 points an hour ago

Yes Thank you for explaining I have no idea how this stuff goes. Yes I almost feel off my chair when starting reading the neighbor one! I thought, oh did I miss this before because there are a bunch of articles or posts by locals on here and really good ones so I thought well I will post and I am sure someone will tell me if posted already and was debunked!! Crazy!! This guy had this info WOW!! Yes and just read someone has call from you tube to dispatch on here by his daughter and that appears to be legit!

I hope he gets something now for his articles!!

[–]ApocalypticCynic 6 points 3 hours ago

Well put and caution of the source was my first thought as well.

My take is this writer is mainly freelance (but with established credits) and created this website as a portfolio for stuff he couldn't get published by any other outlets. It's obviously fairly new, and pretty scarce. It's not a bad idea to showcase talents and have a repository for good work that doesn't sell. Most likely, he'd include a link to this site with pitches for work (it's not really set up for SEO to tout his name/business, and not overly-"markety"/promotional)...but who's to say what the true purpose of the site is.

That being said, the phone call tidbit about LE bypassing the barrier does seem to be verified by the Dispatch recordings, so there's at least that little morsel to consider when weighing the rest of the info contained in the piece....

It is intriguing and does make you go hmmm.....

[–]Thewormsate 10 points 5 hours ago

Not a couple killers, but a couple of planters!

[–]JLWhitaker 5 points 2 hours ago

It's always been proposed that there were two people to plant the RAV because the driver would need a way to leave. This might support that idea.

[–]7-pairs-of-panties [score hidden] an hour ago

Wow!! In a normal investigation when cops try to figure things out they interview several people, neighbors, customers, friends. Why wasn't this man asked if he smelled a fire? Heard screams? Gunshots? Smelled a body burning? Saw a fire? He wasn't asked and NONE of the customers on the property were asked! The salvage yard was open! Guess you don't ask what you already know you want the answers to be.

[–]hos_gotta_eat_too [score hidden] an hour ago

Wait..does everyone remember that freelance writer who had a story he wanted to sell and we kept saying to either blog it or share with us? What if this was the story?

I once spent a lot of time looking at Pagel's actions from the first report of her missing and it seemed as if he was more looking out for her reputation and the Halbach family (financial records, photos, Bradley Czech), rather than leading a missing persons investigation. I believe, though, he knew that the car would be found that morning, that the find was staged, if in fact he did talk with Sturm that morning.

[–]foghaze[S] 4 points an hour ago

I think MTSO just went to him saying "we think we saw her car is at Avery's but no one can know we were there", because of the conflict of interest thing. So he set it up for Pam to find it. I think it's that simple.

Good catch! I had read that before and never questioned how they knew where the vehicle was.

And that safety concern is a huge fake! When Sturm was on the stand she said she was immediately concerned for their safety when they found the RAV-4, BUT when you look at the phone transcripts its clear she's not scared at all. You can tell by the way she asks if she found the right car and then the way she talks while she's looking for the VIN.

And not only that, but Pagel, is clearly not concerned about her safety either. Here she just found the vehicle of the missing woman and you would think a person's first thought is that the perp is hanging around somewhere, maybe with TH herself dead or injured in a bush near by. But they don't even think of that.

If they were really concerned about her safety, they would have told her to stay on the line. But they weren't concerned. That whole thing about safety concerns was only made up afterwards to justify why they had asked if she had permission to be there

claimed in the report that he did a reverse search that led to SA's number, which can't be true.

Exactly. It's this blatant lie that shows the arrogance of this investigation, I think -- that Wiegert, among others, thought it didn't matter.

I've read that the report was written much later, but there's no excuse for that misinformation, I don't care when he wrote it.

Reading the pre trial testimony is revealing in that it shows how involved Pagel was. I'd always assumed he was probably just the figure head of the county of residence of the missing person and which assumed leadership of the investigation. But it now looks as if he may have led, ostensibly, anyway, the focus on the Avery property and SA.

  7. I'm Jeff Klassen, author of three recent articles on Manitowoc including the one about WS - AMA (self.TickTockManitowoc)
    by Algoma_Photo_N_Story

**I am largely doing this AMA in response to this article about 'WS' **

I verified my Reddit name here: https://algomaphotoandstory.wordpress.com/about/

In January 2016 I went to Manitowoc for a week in the wake of the Netflix documentary hype. I went on my own dime and couch surfed not at all trying to solve the case but really just to talk to people and perhaps write about how the hype has affected the small community.

The way I see it the people there, including the cops, are just regular people dealing with the media spotlight on their own town and just going through that experience was a story. I am interested in photography so I thought at the very least I would visually document the area.

I of course wanted to go to the Avery Yard and, as I wrote, Chuck Avery didn't really want any visitors.

Following that I went door-to-door to the houses surrounding the property and asked, politely, if the people there would like to speak with me. Many did not want to speak but for the most part they were polite about it and respected what I was trying to do.

On Wilmer Siebert's property it is unclear which door is his front door and you get the appearance that he uses the back door. So I went to knock on it one day and he was out working on his car or listening to a radio in the car. I really liked him, what a nice old guy, great character. Hard to explain but he was just a nice, kind of, funny guy. But not funny as in crazy, because he seemed all there, though he's old and a bit slower. He has lots of old cars himself (nothing like at the Avery's though) and it seems like he is into engines and that kind of stuff.

I interviewed him, then drove back out a couple days later and interviewed him again. He gave me his daughter's number (also a really really nice person) and she confirmed his story.

Its amazing you guys found the police calls on that youtube video. When I heard them say Victoria's name I couldn't believe it!

Anyways, as soon as I had the interview with WS I thought I might have a story to sell here (which was my intention the whole time though I had no idea where). I called or emailed AP , USA Today, NY Times, and more in the States. They either didn't reply , said they don't have a freelance budget, or said that they can't buy from Canadians for legal reasons.

So I then contacted all the major Canadian outlets and I got a couple people curious but no one bit. I was also trying to sell the story without giving it all away which didn't help me.

    1. I've basically been doing journalism for one year now as my main focus. But I have experience years ago as well. I have a portfolio of photojournlistic (and other) work at http://www.jeffklassen.org. I'm trying to figure out what I want to do as I go. To make money you have to write stories (at least in my brief stint) and I actually really like the investigative or story-finding process. I'm not the worst writer in the world (I will not be addressing the embarrassing spelling mistakes which you all pointed out lol), and it wasn't supposed to be my main focus when I started out, but it seems to be taking over.

I was actually kind of disappointed in the photos I took in Manitowoc which suffered because I was so focused on interviews and trying to sell my work on the fly.

After I got back, by February, no one in Canada was interested in my stories (must have tried 20 or more different places in Canada and Online), so I started having discussions with SooToday about them. Eventually, like in March, SooToday wanted to run it as a story about me travelling there so that it related to the locals here.

So then I had these other stories (WS was considered to specific and not what SooToday normally runs) with nowhere to go, and I was a bit tired of trying to sell them. I made Algoma Photo and Story basically just to run those articles and the iPhone one which I had trouble getting published as well (and maybe others in the future).

When I put them up it was so that people in the Sault that are interested could link to it from the SooToday article. The site also is something I can show potential employers (by the way I'm looking for a full time job...anyone?)

Part of me thought that people would be searching the daily news sites for info on Avery (I know how obsessed people get) and so I wasn't surprised when users from here contacted me. When that article came out I was maybe intending on posting it on Reddit actually, which I frequent mostly to visit comedy subs under a different username.

In fact, before heading to Manitowoc, I had made posts on /r/MakingaMurderer asking to meet locals, and people did get back to me, though I don't think I ended up meeting anyone that way, but I believe I got a few useful tips.

I have two other stories I could write from my time there (one about the occult stuff involving secret groups and another about the psychic -- but to me those are less serious stories).

I don't follow the subs related to this case regularly. I am impressed by the detective work going on that I see though.

Do I think Avery did it or there was a frame up? I don't know. I think at the very least 99% of the cops in the area are getting unfairly harassed. The documentary did make it seem that Dassey at least got an unfair shake though people told me there is more out there that implicate his guilt then was mentioned in MaM.

But I try to keep in mind the psychology and bias behind everything and just open to what anyone is saying. In the end, I went in as neutral as I could, tried to remain neutral throughout, and don't claim to take a side.

My biggest fear is that WS, who was kind enough to be interviewed (and his daughter) are going to get harassed somehow because of this. I read in one of the comments that there is at least one person that frequents these subs that travelled to the area and was perhaps the person that the police said walked into Chuck Avery's place and was escorted back into the city by police (as I mentioned in one of my articles). I don't want that sort of thing happening to WS.

But yeah, ask away, I'll try and answer throughout the day while I am working on other things and even tomorrow if there is still questions.

I think the photo you took of WS was beautiful. You really captured the character and kindness in his face.

I found your article really helpful and quite intriguing. I have some questions for you:

      1. Did you ask WS how he knew it was an FBI agent who visited him? Did he leave a card?

      2. Did the white Jeep have any markings of any kind?

      3. Was WS interested in staying in touch with you to report any updates? Like if he is visited by LE after your article.

      4. I'd love to hear more about the occult club investigation you did.

      That's it for now!

He just said it was an FBI agent. I think I asked him repeatedly if it was an FBI agent. He could be misremembering , I don't know. I take it from some of the comments the fact that an FBI agent there is somewhat controversial? I was not aware of that when I spoke with him.

Just what he said in the article. I asked him many questions about the white Jeep and what he told me was all I could get from him.

He wasn't really interested in staying in touch. Maybe his daughter would be interested. WS seems like he just wants to chill out on his yard and toy around with his old cars and stuff. He is not at all interested in media hype. Who is LE?

Maybe, I am busy doing other things and I might be travelling across Canada soon. If any publications are interested in paying for a story about that I'd be a lot more motivated to get it done! :)

      [–]MustangGal

Did WS see anything that would indicate there was a fire in the quarry around the time of Oct 31 to Nov 8th?

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

      He did not mention that.

      [–]Anniebananagram

Was it Hermann by any chance who told you about the harassment? Or multiple sources? I get the feeling that some of these reports have been exaggerated as a PR move to help their tarnished reputations.

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

Hermann and Zimney (see the article). I have no reason to assume they are lying, they both (I think both...at least Hermann) pulled up emails and searched through them to find the right ones while I was right there. Hermann looked through his emails for like 10 minutes with me. So he didn't have some prepared plan ready.

Plus I think several other incidents were widely reported elsewhere. I seem to remember reading about zimney (who is with city police) and some police problem with trouble causers that occurred weeks after I was in manitowoc. They are probably talking about it to show how crazy it is and perhaps generate empathy which I don't nesc think is evil, a natural thing to do.

Hermann said he was concerned mostly about some of the officers named in the documentary because they were getting severely harassed (like lenk and colbourn), and he said that he knew one of them personally, i think colborn, and was complimentary of him.

When I was with hermann he went into a lot of reasons why its insane to think lenk and colborn would be involVed in a cover up but that wasn't my focus.

I was curious when meeting with Hermann, a couple of things:

did he inform you that all officer interviews must go through him?

did you speak with him after talking to WS

did you realize how big of a story you had regarding WS after interviewing (i still believe you to be the freelance writer who visited us a couple months ago who wanted to sell a story, and we suggested blogging it or sending to Zellner..very glad you got it published if so, and kudos on great work!)

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

He didn't inform me that all interviews must go through him but its pretty standard procedure for most police forces (or most organizations) that I've dealt with for either a specific press officer (or designated spokesperson) to comment or for a higher up. No one wants to get in trouble for saying the wrong thing.

I spoke to WS after Hermann. WS did seem like a big story and I thought it was the most likely one to be published in national paper or a big online site.

      [–][deleted]

Hi Jeff, fantastic article and I really appreciate you taking time to come on here! My questions/questions: Did WS happen to state on that particular day (when he saw 2 vehicles) was the quarry closed? Is that the normal route into the quarry on a regular basis?

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

That seems to be the a main road into the quarry now, and likely was then as well from what I can tell. You can access the quarry from Kuss Rd as well (a small road off Q). When I was there mostly a lot of big trucks were coming through there.

He did not mention if the quarry was closed or open (as in , occupied by workers) when he saw the Rav4 and the Jeep. The actual road is always accessible I think.

      [–]solunaView

Just to clarify, the quarry entrance off of Jambo Creek Rd. is a back or alternate entrance. The same goes for the way in off the end of Kuss Rd. (this way goes through the deer camp). There is another alternate entrance off Fisherville Rd.

The main entrance to the quarry is accessed from highway Q.

The signs at all alternate entrances state that visitors and trucks need to sign in with the gatehouse located off Q before entering.

ETA: The way in off Jambo Creek is now gated (doesn't look as if it was in your pictures/ when you were there). I didn't go to the end of the road off Kuss, I only went as far as the deer camp but there were no gates at least that far.

Could you expand more on his commenting that "It was a white Jeep, just a smaller Jeep." Did you understand him to be saying it was a Jeep Wrangler, or a jeep in the generic usage of the term to describe a jeep-type vehicle?

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

Good question. Could have been the generic term. The one detail he seems to recall clearly is the paint peeling off.

      Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the intriguing article and the great photos. I have a question about WS and the RAV4.

When I was still a teenager with a new drivers licence, my friend and I were consumed by cars. Especially Japanese and European models. We played a game of identifying cars while driving. We got so good at it, we were able to identify cars at night by their headlight patterns alone.

WS seems like a car guy to me. From what you've written, he seemed very certain that it was a RAV4 he saw and not some other small SUV. He was also sure about the Color.

Those early RAV4's were pretty distinct. Would you agree that WS is a car guy and would be the type, like myself, who could easily distinguish a RAV4 from another vehicle?

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

Sorry, not a car expert myself (though that's cool you can use headlights to identify them) so I don't really know how well he can analyze cars holding expert knowledge. I'll say he was pretty confident about identifying it as a rav4 because he was pretty sure it was the same as Halbach's. So, if Im to guess , i'd say "yes" he could easily distinguish it. That's just a guess really.

      [–]SmellyKatz

Hi there! Do you have an open line of communication with WS? Any way to politley probe and see if he has any additional details he may have not shared? Also, there was some confusion about the time of day he saw the vehicles. If at night, were there streetlights that would enable him to see the colors correctly?

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

I sort of do. He never answers his phone and the last few messages I sent to him and his daughter they didn't get back to me. I'm not going to bother them too much, they're good people. I got the impression that he saw the jeep in the day (i want to say afternoon but I know you guys are going to overanalyze every tiny detail) a few days to a week before it was discovered in the yard and then saw the police at night after the investigation began.

      [–]Thewormsate

What I would like to know is, WS had known the Avery's and had to have known that SA spent 18 years incarcerated wrongly, exonerated, then the new charges. He had to have heard that SA was claiming he was being framed in this case, you would think that he would have contacted someone on the defence team with this info to possibly help SA's case, you know, he was his neighbor.

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

I have no answer for you except that he probably didn't know if SA was innocent and was just as confused as everyone else in the area was and the narrative that the Netflix doc put forward was not something widely thought about.

    5. [–]dark-dare

Thank you for the article you wrote. For me, I have read the case files and believe these two men are completely innocent. Your article is very welcome, as it shows there is new evidence out there, and that means, we can have hope.

My question is about the conversation with Herman. I find their inability to admit wrongdoing in SA previous case quite appalling. I would ask why, when they faced a 36 million dollar civil suit, and it was clearly recognized that they had a conflict of interest, why they would put their agency in a position that might compromise the entire investigation? Did Herman speak about that at all or does the department think it has done nothing wrong?

If you could expound on that interview in more detail, that would be great.

Best of luck with the chosen career, making less, but doing what speaks to your passion, is the path to follow.

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

Hermann was quite empathetic talking about Avery's first trial. I don't think Hermann had anything to with that though right? Anyways, we talked about that and I sincerely felt that he had weighed in his own mind how awful that was for SA. We mentioned the civil suit and the money invovled and he said something like "how can you put a price on even one year of your life being taken from you?" when we were talking about it. He made a good point, which I touched on in article but maybe not clearly enough, when he said that even if his dept. tried to frame SA , they had no way of knowing that his first civil suit would get thrown out or reduced to what it was. There are too many variables to control. He also just seemed like a sincere guy.

      [–]Alright_Landlord

When you met with WS, how did the information you provided in your article come about?

Did you ask him specific questions about whether he had seen TH's vehicle, anything suspicious and whether he was interviewed by LE?

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

Ah good question. He definitely brought it up. I think I asked him what it was like at the time, if he saw tv crews, if police blocked off his road, etc. WS said he recently saw either the entire Netflix doc or some of it through a family member. This got him thinking and I think he mentioned that seeing the doc made him remember the police at night. And the rest came out of just me asking questions from there.

Obviously he volunteered the jeep info on his own ( I wouldn't know to ask about it).

Although WS said he thinks it TH's Rav4, how can we really know? We don't.

His daughter said he has had this story all along (about the jeep and the police).

Hi Jeff. Thanks so much for your great contribution. WS said that the two vehicles were really traveling, like maybe 40 miles an hour. A member here said yesterday that 40 mph wasn't really fast for most back country roads. What's the surface like on Janda Creek Road? Or do you think that over the seasons and the years it would be too hard to say what it was like in the autumn of '05?

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

I can't say what it was like 05. I can try and speculate assuming the conditions were the same as today though: At that particular spot it's a corner. And the quarry road itself is rather beat up, if I recall. I would say that 40mph would likely be quite a fast speed at the particular spot where he said he saw the vehicles. It would be the normal speed on Jambo Creek Rd, I think (I can't remember if there is stop sign near there), but the quarry road is quite small and rough.

      [–]bennybaku

If this has already been asked, forgive me, if you know, has WS mentioned what he saw to the Averys?

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

He did not say to me that he told them but from what others have said in this subreddit , family members have said he was been telling them this for years.

      [–]whiteycnbr

Had Avery's lawyers met/talked to WS during the investigation?

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

I think no one, essentially, has.

      [–]OpenMind4U

Can you confirm that WS did talk to FBI agent? And if yes then did WS saw this agent's tag/ID?...and if yes then would, by any chance, WS remembered this FBI Agent name???

      [–]Algoma_Photo_N_Story[S]

Sorry, he just told me it was an FBI agent. It probablly was because it's so specific. I really doubt he remembers the FBI agent's name.

  8. Manitowoc After Making a Murderer
    By Jeff Klassen
    April 28, 2016

Almost no one in the small community wanted to speak on the record because, many of them said, they didn’t want to get themselves in trouble with the Avery family or anyone else in their small community.

At times interviewees rolled their eyes or got angry when approached about the subject of Steven Avery or slamming their door shut.

“I’m not talking to you; you’re not a local,” said one bar patron, fed up with the national attention.

Heard more than once was the sentiment, “if those documentary filmmakers think he’s innocent why don’t they have him live near them.”

There were also several rumors and things said anonymously about Steven Avery.

It was said that he committed break and enters in the area, that he harassed neighbors, and that when he was released from prison in 2003, that he knew police couldn’t touch him so would drive his car above the speed limit wherever he went and would act in an arrogant manner.

These were all unsubstantiated claims, and the people that said them would not give their names, but they are representative of the types of things people in the area are said about Avery.

However, even with the many negative-statements about Avery, the reaction was mixed and many people also said they had never had a problem with any of the Avery family and that the documentary had raised a lot of questions in them.

If there is one shared sentiment between almost all the interviewed Manitowoc County people, officials and police its that the media spotlight must be difficult for the family of Halbach.

“The re-victimizing the Halbach family… is troubling. Its in the paper, its in the news, (and) Netflix. Its also of concern to a lot of people, the re-victimization of that family,” said LaBre echoing a common Manitowoc County sentiment.

    1. The Police and Avery’s Auto Salvage

Sherriff Hermann pointed out that, despite the documentary portraying local police as being at odds with the Avery family, the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s department actually used to have a good working relationship with their family business, Avery’s Auto Salvage; using them to tow disabled and abandoned vehicles off the highway.

Avery’s Auto Salvage (AAS) was heavily featured in the documentary.

The business property not only includes a 40-acre car lot but also the homes of the family and the trailer and garage where Avery and Dassey are claimed to have killed and raped Halbach.

Hermann said that the working relationship with their businesses ended around the time of the 2005 trial and that, although the salvage yard wanted to continue a working relationship later, Hermann decided not to because of a recorded prison call he heard between Brendan Dassey and Allan Avery, Brendan’s grandfather and Steven’s father.

“I think from the sound of the phone call (Allan) could have been intoxicated and he was saying ‘that motherfucker’ (etc.) – just swearing up a storm about us to his grandson and how bad we were. I said ‘You know what? After that phone call I don’t think its good for us to send people up there to have vehicles towed in’,” said Hermann.

  9. WISCONSIN 2005, who drove the black SUBURBANS, the DOJ or the FBI ?
    by SpiritWolf395

The crime scene on Kuss rd, there's 4 suburbans lined up, just like to know if they are DOJ or FBI. I have a theory about this crime scene being already there on 4th and 5th, during the flyover videos, thats why they wouldn't show Kuss rd ! Could they have gotten an anonymous tip about a body being buried there, even before Teresa went missing. Were they investigating somebody because of their internet search history, and missing girls? Could this have be a command post for FBI or DOJ special ops to monitor the Avery Savage Yard ? This is why I think the DOJ files on this are sealed, they might show a totally different investigation before Teresa went missing !

    [–]black-dog-barks

Back in that time frame of early 2000-2005 the country was being hit with rural operations of meth production using old barns in rural areas where the odor of cooking wouldn't be detected by neighbors ...it spurring the successful Breaking Bad TV series.

There has been some conclusive proof the photographer prior to TH at AT was working undercover for the DOJ. Drug trade funds from the Federal government often require joint task forces with local agencies.

I think we are all going to find when the case is solved by KZ that TH was the new operative working the MC/CC area up to GB working undercover out of AT. The video she makes about death could very well been about knowledge working undercover if you get exposed you will die a horrible death.

I now believe ST, BoD , and MO were cooking meth either in ST RV just like Breaking Bad or in an old barn on that property. ST arranged for Barb to lure TH to the area with the Red Van. The three working together intercepted her on RT 147 , tortured her down on Kuss Rd. and when done buried her body temporarily until they figured a way to dispose of her permanently. Thus the dog hits of a corpse at Kuss Rd. They did a bad job hiding her SUV near ST RV on rt 147 and it was seen by the truck driver. Thus allowing AC to find it, and put a new battery from the MC Garage into it, and with help of the Sheriff, Lenk, then MW and TF framed SA to make the law suit go away.

ST most likely able by the Burn barrel and his companies smelter disposed of most of TH... the MCSO had CB available for planting some bones in SA fire pit... it's why no perfect match of DNA... it's not because of burning but her being a cousin.

ST and BoD alibi each other with help of Barb.... they are able to buy the new house because of the drug trade... the local cops continue taking their bribes to say nothing about their meth operation. Thus MW and Barb remain "friends" all these years.

SA is hated by ST because he was interfering with his meth operation being around so much. Thus why he says it's the best thing that ever happened when he was sent back to jail.

MaM 2 and all the scenes with Barb started my head thinking ..God...she looks like a meth head... a tweeker... then it all fell into place.

My theory: At Kuss Rd, the DOJ or FBI were set up there during the flyover video, which means they were already investigating something there. Maybe they were tipped off to a dead body being buried there, or something of the sorts, but, yea, you have a very interesting theory for sure, sounds logical.

A professional photographer doing Autotrader would starve to death on what they get paid; that, and the fact that anybody could take pictures for Autotrader!

I wish there was some way to date the pictures of Kuss Rd. Even the pilot says something to Jerry Pagel when they fly over Kuss Rd in the plane.

The crappy flyover footage was edited to not show things for sure, but why would the cops try to hide the RAV4 when it should be there, or maybe it's not under the tarp!

      [–]black-dog-barks

Exactly ... when you see the big black Suburbans at a crime it usually involves a crime the Federal authorities are interested in... Gangs, drugs, human trafficking etc. Most time they are out of the regional or State office of the FBI to see if they have jurisdiction over the scene.

If TH was working undercover, her going missing and a burial site found, the Feds would all over that. It is a red flag that something serious happened.
